BIOGRAPHY
I will receive my PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in biochemistry where I studied the social behavior of leafcutter ants. Prior, I completed a Fulbright grant investigating novel mechanisms of aging at the University of Hong Kong. I am passionate about traveling, having gone to over 40 countries, all the US states, and all MLB stadiums. I strive to have a career that tackles impactful scientific questions coupled with helping build research infrastructure globally.
PhD PAPER
This paper describes the first molecular characterization of leafcutter ants (Atta cephalotes) - a species of social insect pioneered by E.O. Wilson. The research describes novel behavioral regulation of two neuropeptides (Neuroparsin-A and CCAP). Reduction of Neuroparsin-A in the brain of a soldier ant converts the animal to nursing behavior. Stimulation of CCAP in the brain of both soldiers and nurses results in activation of cutting behavior. The paper extends these findings into another eusocial species - the Naked Mole Rat. Through the first genomic characterization of caste in eusocial mammals, I investigate orthologs between the leafcutter ant and naked mole rat brains to investigate the origins of eusociality.
PUBLICATIONS
Publishing has provided me with a valuable platform to connect with experts and enthusiasts in the field of biology, significantly expanding my professional network. Through the process of sharing my research findings, I've had the opportunity to delve into new techniques and explore diverse areas of biology, fostering continuous growth and learning. As I move forward in my career, I aspire to nurture and embark on numerous exciting collaborations that will further enrich my understanding and contribute to the advancement of biological sciences.
TRAVEL
My passion for traveling knows no bounds, as I've had the privilege of exploring 48 countries, visiting all 50 US states, and even experiencing the vibrant atmosphere of every MLB stadium. With each journey, I've been immersed in diverse cultures and landscapes, fueling my insatiable desire for adventure. Constantly dreaming of my next expedition, I am determined to continue traversing the globe, embracing new cultures, and savoring the beauty of our world.
